Red Deer

We have a number of Red Deer at the Fun Farm. Some of them are friendly enough to feed and touch.

Hello, we are The Fun Farm Red Deer. We are all originally from Scotland so when calling us you should speak to us in our local Scottish dialect, (ask the farmer and he will tell you what to say). The large stag is called ‘Thunder’.

The male deer is called a stag and has antlers, the older a stag is, the more antlers he will have. Each year in the springtime the antlers will completely drop off and he will grow a set of new ones. A female deer is called a hind and she is smaller and more delicate in appearance than the stag and she doesn't grow antlers. A baby deer is called a calf.

The red deer at The Fun Farm give birth in June. The calves are born with little white spots on their coats, however these markings fade after a few weeks.

Stags usually live to about 10 years old, hinds to about 12 years.

We mainly like to eat grass, but we also eat hay and concentrate to make sure we get enough vitamins and minerals, (you can buy this in the Barn Café).
